Picture 2    Anti-flood protection of urban units by means of protective earth banks

Built-up areas will be separated from the inundation area (where no building-up will be allowed) by means of protective earth banks. Earth banks as protective measures are safer than dikes and suit well into the landscape at a height of less than 2.5m. Earth bank areas with inclination from 1:4 to 1:10 can be cultivated, grassed-down or afforested (outside the stabilisation area). Possible earth bank deformations can be repaired easily. Earth bank construction is more expensive than construction of dikes, but, on the other hand, earth bank operation costs are lower than those of dikes.
